World must protect half of Earth’s wildlife area

Protecting half of all land and oceans on Earth by 2050 is key to preserving wildlife and the benefits the areas provide, such as carbon absorption, write the National Geographic Society’s Jonathan Baillie and the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Ya-Ping Zhang in an editorial published in Science. “We are learning more and more that the large areas that remain are important for providing services for all life,” Baillie says.
