Asteroid-induced tsunami may have had role in dinosaurs’ extinction
An asteroid that collided with Earth approximately 65 million years ago set off a tsunami that originated in the Gulf of Mexico and contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs, researchers said at the American Geophysical Union fall meeting. The asteroid, which was 14 kilometers wide, resulted in “chaotic waves from the initial blast of water away from the impact site, and waves from ejecta falling back into the water” and deformed the Earth’s crust, says lead researcher Molly Range of the University of Michigan.
