The results of a small study published in Science Advances suggest that in addition to the ability to judge quantity, honeybees can add and subtract. Bees trained to do simple calculations were correct between 64% and 72% of the time, which is a success rate better than chance, but the bees’ success might be due to the ability to make associations and solve problems instead of equations, says study co-author Adrian Dyer.
