A study led by Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute found that dying coral and damage to the Florida Keys’ marine ecosystem are traced to the state’s nutrient runoff — not just to warming waters. Elevated rainfall levels, which are linked to climate change, send fertilizer-laden water into Florida Bay by way of the Everglades.
