Deep coral algae develop efficient photosynthesis process

Algae that live in deep mesophotic coral reefs where little light penetrates have adapted a method of photosynthesis that allows them to use what light energy there is to survive, according to a study in Frontiers in Marine Science. Researchers say the Symbiodinium algae’s photosynthesis process is more efficient than that utilized by species that live closer to light sources.
