Earth has a magnetic field that protects the planet from the stream of charged particles coming from the sun. It is thought to be generated by electric currents that are produced by the movement of liquid metal at the planet’s core.
Moon lost its magnetic field 1B years ago
A study of lunar rocks indicates that the moon lost its magnetic field about a billion years ago after its core crystallized, researchers from MIT and China have found. At the time, the moon’s magnetic field was much stronger than Earth’s and the moon was twice as close to Earth, but scientists are unsure why the core crystallized, according to findings published in Science Advances.
