Observations by the Mars Express space probe suggest the presence of three subsurface lakes on the red planet and add more evidence of a previously reported fourth lake beneath the surface of the south pole, according to findings published in Nature Astronomy. Astronomers used data gathered from between 2012 and 2019 by the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding instrument, which bounces radio waves off Mars’ surface looking for areas that reflect signals back, suggesting the presence of water.
