Mining on the moon or Mars may get a boost from bacteria here on Earth, a study in Nature Communications suggests. In experiments on the International Space Station, the bacteria Sphingomonas desiccabilis got bits of rare earth elements out of basalt in microgravity and the kind of gravity found on Mars in addition to Earth gravity.
