Necropsies on 53 orcas found dead in the northeastern Pacific Ocean over a decade revealed various causes of death, including malnutrition, ship strikes and infections, researchers reported in PLOS ONE. Researchers say human activity is directly or indirectly behind many orca deaths, and the study presents a baseline for conservation efforts, says veterinary pathologist and lead author Stephen Raverty.
