Researchers have found evidence that microorganisms live in extremely hot sediment around 1,180 meters deep beneath the seafloor off Japan’s coast, and describe their findings in Science. The sediment, which measured 120 degrees Celsius, contained evidence of metabolism, which the scientists say could point to the plausibility of life on planets with harsh environments.
