A study published in Nature Communications finds that some life forms living in ocean floor sediments get their energy from hydrogen and oxidant molecules released when molecular bonds of ocean water are broken by radioactive isotopes. “This work provides an important new perspective on the availability of resources that subsurface microbial communities can use to sustain themselves,” says report co-author Justine Sauvage of the University of Gothenburg.
