Thrusters propelled by magnetic fields could help astronauts travel to Mars and other planets more efficiently, according to a new concept described in the Journal of Plasma Physics. The method would utilize magnetic reconnection, which generates large amounts of energy when magnetic fields within charged plasmas come together, break apart and then come back together.
