Volcanoes may have erupted on Mars within the last 50,000 years, according to new research in Icarus that questions the assumption that Mars is volcanically inactive. Scientists say data from Mars orbiters suggest a volcanic deposit in the Cerberus Fossae system in the planet’s Elysium Planitia region formed recently when expanding gas sent magma from the surface.
