An ancient spider in fossilized resin resembles an ant because it positioned its two front legs as antennae and modified other body parts to ward off predators that find ants distasteful or dangerous, says paleobiologist George Poinar Jr., author of a study in Historical Biology. Colombia, where the specimen of Myrmarachne colombiana was found, lacks modern evidence of such mimicry, and Poinar says the shift could be due to evolution and changes in the environment.
