Music elicits physical responses in study

Music listeners feel physical sensations in the heart when chord progressions surprise them, and they feel it in the abdomen when chords follow their expectations, eliciting calm, empathy, nostalgia and satisfaction, according to a study in iScience. More than 500 participants reported physical and emotional reactions to music, say researchers, who plan to extend the work to measure heartbeat and other physical changes.
