Hydrogen sulfide, a molecule that smells like rotten eggs, makes up much of the atmosphere of exoplanet HD 189733 b, according to data from the James Webb Space Telescope described in Nature. The discovery could provide clues about the formation of different planet types, says study co-author astrophysicist Guangwei Fu, noting that hydrogen sulfide is in Jupiter but had not previously been found outside our solar system.
