A novel imaging method has revealed unprecedented detail inside a volcano and could significantly improve eruption forecasting, according to findings in Communications Earth & Environment. The twist on matrix imaging combines data from multiple sensors called geophones to calculate details that are inaccessible to the individual sensors, and it also unscrambles distortions of seismic waves to reveal structures as deep as 10 kilometers.
