Hyper-Defensive Engineered Plants Produce Fewer Seeds, Grow Shorter

Plants engineered to always be on guard for pests tend to be smaller and produce fewer viable seeds than their less-protective counterparts because much of their energy is used for defense, according to a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers are looking for ways to improve crops’ ability to maintain yield while staving off insects without using pesticides.
