James Peebles, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for helping to bring “new understanding of the universe’s structure and history, and the first discovery of a planet orbiting a solar-type star outside our solar system,” said the Nobel committee. Peebles will be given half the prize money for his work developing a theoretical framework of the history of the universe, while Mayor and Queloz were recognized for the first discovery of an exoplanet, 51 Pegasi b.
