The kea, a species of parrot that lives only on New Zealand’s South Island where food can be scarce, can understand probabilities, deciding on probable outcomes when presented with a choice that offers rewards, according to findings published in Nature Communications. “This food scarcity is probably the reason why they are highly inquisitive — it is essential to their survival that they can readily assess potential new sources of food,” says study author Amalia Bastos.
