Indoor cats bond with their owners, and misbehavior might be a signal of separation anxiety, according to a study published in PLOS ONE, but bad behavior could also be a sign of boredom, frustration or an undiagnosed health condition, says cat behaviorist Ingrid Johnson. Cats need a clean litter box, appropriate feeding and mental stimulation, but persistent inappropriate urinating or defecating warrants veterinary attention, Johnson says.
