A study in Scientific Reports found that cats respond positively when people, including strangers, narrow their eyes and blink slowly. Cats may perceive direct eye contact as threatening — while slowly blinking breaks a stare — but it’s also possible cats were rewarded along the path to domestication when they narrowed their eyes and blinked slowly, researchers say.
