Several Earth-based telescopes caught the rare light flash that signified the stretching, and ultimately the death, of a star by a supermassive black hole about 215 million light-years away. One of the places that viewed the tidal disruption event was the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, and researchers shared their findings in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
