Paper co-author Kaitlin Brickey, a Penn State graduate student in chemical engineering, used a scanning electron microscope to examine how dense pockets in membranes could hinder efficient water filtration
Reverse osmosis membranes with uniform densities desalinate water more efficiently than those with highly variable densities, according to a study published in the journal Science. The use of such membranes could improve access to clean drinking water and reduce water costs, researchers said. Critical future technology.  Click on title to read article.efforts.
