The fossil of a mammal that lived 66 million years ago “bends and even breaks a lot of rules” about what mammals of that period were thought to be, according to David Krause, author of an in-depth study on the creature published in the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology Memoir Series. The Adalatherium was about the size of an opossum with clawed, crocodile-like back legs, front teeth like a rabbit, an unusual hole on its snout and back teeth researchers say are unlike anything they have ever seen.
