Kank australis, a newly identified raptor from Patagonia, may have hunted fish like modern herons instead of chasing land prey, according to a study in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, which reveals that Kank’s Unenlagiidae family was distributed across broader areas of South America than previously known. Fossil evidence includes specialized neck vertebrae for rapid strikes and strong muscle attachments, as well as pronounced ridges on teeth for gripping slippery prey.
